How much does air conditioning cost to install in Scotland?

By Kenny Gardner·4 November 2026·7 min read

A single-room air conditioning system from Thermal Care starts from £2,195, fully installed. Multi-room systems are priced on the number of rooms, the size of each indoor unit and how the pipework has to run, so we quote them after a free survey. You can get an early idea of what your rooms would need with our air conditioning designer, and every price is confirmed on site before you commit.

Single-room (single split) prices

A single split is one indoor unit on the wall of the room you want to cool or heat, connected to one outdoor unit. Our standard range is the Daikin Comfora, which is the model most of our customers choose, and a single-room system starts from £2,195 installed. The price moves up with the output of the unit (2.5 kW to 6 kW), which is set by the room, not by its floor area alone — see sizing below.

Multi-room (multi-split) prices

A multi-split runs several indoor units, one per room, from a single outdoor unit. That means one box on the outside wall instead of three or four. We size the Daikin outdoor unit to the number of rooms, and the price includes one dedicated electrical circuit.

Two-, three-, four- and five-room systems are quoted after survey, because the spread within each size comes down to the indoor units you need and how the pipework is routed. Five-room designs are always confirmed on site. The air conditioning designer gives you a guide figure before we visit.

What's included in a standard install

For a single-room system, the price covers:

  • one indoor unit and one outdoor unit
  • normal wall mounting
  • up to 5 metres of interconnecting pipework and cabling between the two units
  • gravity condensate drainage (the water the unit produces drains away naturally, without a pump)
  • local electrical connection
  • full commissioning, so the system is tested and set up properly before we leave

A single-room install is usually finished in a day. Multi-room systems take longer.

All refrigerant work is done by our own REFCOM-certified (F-gas) engineers, so it's handled legally and compliantly.

What adds to the cost

The price above covers a straightforward job. These are the things that can change it, and why we won't give you a final figure without seeing the property:

Long or concealed pipe runs. Anything beyond 5 metres between the indoor and outdoor units, or pipework that needs to be hidden inside walls, ceilings or boxing, adds labour and materials.

Condensate that can't drain by gravity. If there's no natural fall for the drain, a condensate pump may be needed.

Electrics. A single split connects locally. If your consumer unit needs work or a new circuit is required, that adds cost. Multi-splits already include one dedicated circuit.

Flats and communal buildings. Where the outdoor unit goes, who owns the wall, and whether you need permission from a factor or other owners all need checking. These are quoted after survey.

Conservatories. Glass gains and loses heat quickly, so sizing is harder to get right. We always survey conservatories and never estimate them online.

Listed buildings and larger jobs. Listed properties, five-plus room designs and commercial work are quoted after survey. For business premises, see our commercial air conditioning service.

Choosing a spec level

Within each size there are three levels of Daikin indoor unit:

  • Essential – Sensira. A solid, no-frills unit for spare rooms and occasional use.
  • Recommended – Comfora. Our most popular choice and the one the from price is based on.
  • Premium – Perfera. The quietest range we offer — quiet enough for a bedroom.

If the unit is going in a bedroom, Premium is worth considering. For a home office or living room, most people are happy with Recommended. We fit Daikin first; we can source other brands if you have a preference.

How sizing works: kW is not the same as room size

The kW figure is the unit's output: how much heating or cooling it can deliver. A bigger room doesn't automatically mean a bigger unit. What matters is how much heat the room gains or loses, which depends on:

  • the room's floor area and ceiling height
  • how well it's insulated
  • how much glazing it has and which way it faces (a south-facing room with big windows gains a lot of heat in summer)
  • how many people and how much equipment use the room (computers and TVs give off heat)

Getting this right matters both ways. An undersized unit runs flat out and never quite gets there. An oversized one costs more to buy and cycles on and off, which is less comfortable. Our surveyor checks the room properly before recommending a size, which is one reason every price is confirmed on site.

Servicing costs

Air conditioning should be serviced once a year to keep it efficient and catch problems early. Our annual maintenance visit is £120 for a single system, plus £40 for each extra indoor unit. We'll also service systems we didn't install. See our air conditioning page.

Planning permission

In Scotland, air source heat pumps on houses can fall under permitted development (Class 6H), but only if certain limits are met: one air source heat pump per building, no part protruding more than 1 metre from the wall or roof, not within the curtilage of a listed building or in a World Heritage Site, and in a conservation area only at ground floor level on the rear elevation. The equipment must also meet the MCS planning standard for air source heat pumps (MCS 020, Issue 1.3). Whether a cooling-led air-to-air system sits inside Class 6H is a grey area — our guide to planning permission for air conditioning in Scotland explains it.

Flats, maisonettes, listed buildings, conservation areas and communal walls need specific checks. We'll flag anything we spot at survey, but getting approvals is the property owner's responsibility.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a grant for air conditioning in Scotland?+

No. Air conditioning (an air-to-air heat pump) isn't eligible for the Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant, which is for air-to-water systems that provide all of a home's heating and hot water. If you want a grant-funded system, look at our air source heat pumps page.

Can I get a price without a survey?+

A single-room system starts from £2,195 installed, and our air conditioning designer gives you a guide for more rooms. But we don't commit to a final price without a free survey, because pipe routes, electrics, wall construction and room heat loads all vary. Conservatories, flats, listed buildings and five-plus room systems are always quoted after a survey.

How long does installation take?+

A single-room system is usually installed in a day, including commissioning. Multi-room systems take longer, because there are more indoor units to fit and more pipework to run back to the outdoor unit. We'll give you a realistic timescale at survey, based on your property.

Is a multi-split cheaper than several single splits?+

Not always on price alone, but it means one outdoor unit on the wall rather than several, which many people prefer for looks and space. It also includes a dedicated electrical circuit. Which works out better depends on your layout and how far each room is from a suitable outdoor spot. Our surveyor will recommend whichever suits your home.
