Electric Heating: Radiators and Electric Boilers, With Honest Advice

Call 01506 894600
Modern electric radiator installed in a home

For some homes, electric heating is genuinely the right answer: flats with no gas supply, buildings where an outdoor heat pump unit can't be sited, landlords who want simplicity, and small well-insulated spaces. For others, it's an expensive mistake sold by companies that only fit one thing. We install electric radiators, electric boilers, heat pumps and gas systems, so the recommendation you get is the right one for your home, not the only one in our van.

Is Electric Heating Right for Your Home?

Usually yes, when:
  • Your property has no mains gas and an air source heat pump isn't practical
  • You're in a flat where the factor or building won't allow an outdoor unit
  • You're a landlord wanting low-maintenance heating with no annual gas safety certificate
  • You're replacing old storage heaters with something you can actually control
  • The space is small, well insulated, or heated intermittently
Honestly, usually no, when:
  • You have mains gas, a modern boiler will cost far less to run
  • Your home qualifies for the £7,500–£9,000 heat pump grant, grant-funded heat pumps beat electric heating on running costs by a wide margin
  • You're heating the whole home all day, an air-to-air system typically delivers the same warmth for roughly a quarter of the running cost

We'll tell you which list you're on before we quote, that's the whole point of us.

Modern Electric Radiators

Today's electric radiators are not the storage heaters you grew up with:

01 Room-by-room control

Precise digital thermostats, schedules per room, app control; heat only the rooms you're using, only when you're using them

02 Instant, accurate heat

No overnight charging, no running out by teatime, no heating an empty house

03 Neat installation

Wall-mounted, wired properly by our own electricians, certified for your records

04 Storage Heater Replacement, Out With the Night-Charge Guesswork

Out with the old units and their scorched walls, in with controllable heating and reclaimed floor space

Priced per radiator: exact pricing depends on model and wiring, quoted per home after a free survey.

Electric Boilers

Where you want radiators and hot water from a wet system but gas isn't an option, no supply, no flue route, or a building that won't permit one, an electric boiler, sometimes called an electric combi boiler, replaces a gas boiler like-for-like.

Installed price confirmed by free survey.

Running Costs: The Straight Answer

On electric heating cost, we’re straight: it’s the most expensive heat per kilowatt-hour: every unit of electricity becomes exactly one unit of heat, while a heat pump turns it into three or four. We won't pretend otherwise. What keeps electric heating sensible where it fits:

  • Room-level control: the biggest saving isn't the heater, it's not heating empty rooms
  • Time-of-use tariffs: if you’re on Economy 7 or a time-of-use tariff, scheduling does the saving
  • Insulation first: in a small, well-insulated space the absolute cost stays modest even at a higher unit rate
  • Zero servicing costs: no annual service, no gas certificate, minimal moving parts

And if your usage says a heat pump or air-to-air system would genuinely serve you better, we'll show you that maths before you spend, we fit those too.

For Landlords

All-electric heating removes the annual gas safety certificate from your compliance list, cuts maintenance to near zero, and modern radiators with locked schedules keep tenant bills sane. Electrical safety obligations still apply, and we handle the certification. Portfolio pricing available, and we can schedule installs alongside your other properties' gas visits. Electric Heating FAQs

Electric, heat pump, or gas, we fit all three, so the advice is honest.

Get the Straight Answer

How much do electric radiators cost to install?

+

Priced per radiator depending on model and wiring, quoted per home after a free survey, published honestly, like all our pricing.

Are electric radiators expensive to run?

+

Per unit of heat, electricity is the most expensive fuel, we say that plainly. Room-by-room control, scheduling and decent insulation keep real-world costs sensible in the homes electric heating suits; where it doesn't suit, we'll recommend what does.

What's the difference between electric radiators and storage heaters?

+

Storage heaters charge overnight and release heat whether you want it or not, often running out by evening. Modern electric radiators heat instantly, room by room, on schedules you control, the difference in comfort and waste is substantial.

Can an electric boiler replace my gas boiler?

+

Yes, like-for-like on your existing radiators and pipework, with no flue or gas supply needed. It's the right answer where gas isn't available or permitted; where gas or a heat pump is possible, running costs usually favour those, and we'll tell you so.

Do electric boilers provide hot water?

+

Yes, either directly or paired with a hot water cylinder for stored hot water, depending on your home's demand.

Is there a grant for electric heating in Scotland?

+

Not for standard electric radiators or boilers, and we won't invent one. The substantial funding (£7,500–£9,000 plus a 0% loan) is for air source heat pumps, and if your home qualifies we'll say so, because it changes the maths completely.

Do electric heating systems need servicing?

+

Barely, no annual service, no gas certificate. Electrical safety checks on the installation still apply, and we provide the certification.

I'm a landlord: is all-electric worth it?

+

Often, yes: no annual gas safety certificate, minimal maintenance, and controllable heating tenants can't accidentally run up huge bills on. We'll price your portfolio honestly against keeping gas.

How long does installation take?

+

Electric radiators: typically a day for a whole flat or small home. Electric boilers: usually one to two days including cylinder work, confirmed at survey.

Which areas do you cover?

+

All of West Lothian from our Bathgate base, see the towns above.
